Osheen Harruthoonyan: Black Garden

Speaking with Osheen Harruthoonyan about his photography process is like speaking with a child excitedly explaining a detailed fascination with dinosaurs. Eager to educate you on how he hand-processes each photo negative in the dark room. Painting, scratching and dabbing the film particles using a variety of chemical solutions and water applications, a process so unique that a film maker took interest and is working on documenting it. When asked if he is scared that someone will use this unique treatment he grinned wildly, saying that ‘no one would be crazy enough to do it’, and then noted that even if anyone did it would be their own interpretation.

Diamond Rings’ new vid strikes a chord

Diamond Rings is a performer on a mission to open-minds, practically turning himself inside out to expose fragility, strength, confusion and determination. DR caught buzz with low budget videos of perfect-pop songs with his solemn baritone narrative. In his latest video, ‘It’s Not My Party’, performer John O’ shows Diamond Rings in two versions: the first as a queer ‘man’ in woman’s clothing demonstrating a curious and gentle person who has a bad night, the second as a masculinely dressed pianist who wears the marks of the first character’s experience.

Graydon James and the Young Novelists head back to the studio

Graydon James and The Young Novelists are a six-piece folk-pop band with beautifully layered arrangements of vocal harmonies. Mayoral candidate Keith Cole talks about the arts.

His honesty is reassuring, he’s not trying to fool you. Cole is a teacher at OCAD and legendary performer both on and off Church Street, a self-made top 6 candidate bold enough to campaign in drag, a year round cyclist and a gay man who has seen members of the queer community depend on public health. His campaign is built around what is truly important to him, joking that all the election really comes down to potholes and garbage collection anyway.

Is Toronto’s economy really failing?

We all know Rob Ford has lied about, well, a lot of things: drug use, allegations of domestic abuse, that only homos and drug users get AIDS.

The question is, what else is Rob Ford lying about?

Recent stats indicate – a lot of things. We aren’t talking ignorant biased opinions or personal cover-ups (those are his politics, like them or leave them). He is lying about my home and your’s, Toronto. Ford says Toronto is failing financially, however, the facts tell a different story. If his whole campaign is based on Toronto’s failing economy, his team isn’t doing their research or at least bending the truth.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, good not bad.

I admit it, I don’t get all of the art (to be fair, I don’t get all the music, movies and photography I take-in either). But, I love that all-work-and-no-play Toronto allows it’s wild-ones to express themselves in massive and stunning display. I am amazed at the concept of a million people up all night participating in art. And most importantly, I love that it happened (and will continue to happen).
